Galaxy starting XI

Big news with the signing of Giovani dos Santos. Coach and GM Arena talks about dos Santos in the video below.

So what will the team look like when he is available for the line-up sheet in August?

Goalie:
Penado
Defense:
Gargan, Leonardo, Gonzalez, Rogers
Central midfield:
Gerrard, Juninho
Wide midfield:
Lletget, dos Santos
Forward:
Keane, Zardes

Subs:
Goalie:
Rowe
Defense:
DeLa Garza, Dunivant
Midfield:
Husidic, Walker
Forward:
Gordon, Villarreal

What do you think?

Will our DPs match up with other MLS club's DPs?

A lot of other teams have picked up DPs as the MLS is continuing to lure more high level talent.

Perhaps, the LA Galaxy competitive advantage is identifying solid mid-price and lower priced-young talent on the rise.

Barring injuries, the Galaxy should make the play-offs! Of course, six teams per conference make the playoffs so that isn't a huge accomplishment. But then of course, will all the pieces come together for them to make a deep run in the post-season?

Go Galaxy!

Episode 5 of Liverpool to LA...

Liverpool Starting XI for 2015-2016 Season?

Will Liverpool land any more signings?

Which players will be sold off to raise cash?

We shall see.

With the signings so far plus the selling of Sterling, the team is about even in terms of cash. Liverpool does have a log jam of players they are paying that they aren't sure they want to keep: Lambert, Borini, Balotelli leap to mind. In the end, they may keep at least one of them in case of injuries to starters and for squad work in the hectic schedule.

Will they splash out cash for a star player?

Benteke is often mentioned but until some exec is standing next to a player holding a Liverpool shirt in a press conference all the rumors are just that -- rumors!

But as it stands, who would be the starting XI at this moment?

My guesses:
Goalie: Mignolet
4-4-2
Defense: Clyne, Skrtel, Lovren, Sakho/Moreno
Defensive midfield: Henderson, Milner
Offensive midfield: Coutinho, Lallana/Markovic
Forward: Firmino, Ings/Origi

UPDATE: Benteke has signed!
4-2-3-1
Defense: Clyne, Skrtel, Lovren, Sakho (Moreno, Can, Gomez as needed)
Defensive midfield: Henderson, Milner (Can, Lucas, Allen as needed)
Offensive midfield: Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana/Markovic/Ibe (Who will claim the 3rd spot on a regular basis? Would think Lallana if healthy)
Forward: Benteke (Ings/Origi when extra forward needed or when Benteke needs a break)

Subs and question marks:
Goalie: Bogdan
Defense:
Enrique - Didn't play a lot last season. I suppose you need to keep for injuries and squad work for FA-League-Europa Cup.
Can - Played a lot last season. Is he going to be defense or midfield? And could he crack on any regular basis the starting XI considering the XI I listed above?
Toure - Older but solid role player.
Gomez - youngster, new signing
Midfield:
Lucas - Solid role player
Allen - Solid role player
Ibe - Youngster, with lots of upside
Forward:
Lambert - keep or not?
Borini - keep or not?
Balotelli - keep or not?
Sturidge - injured currently but when fit will start

Who else would have serious consideration for making the starting XI and substitute VII on a regular basis?

Galaxy 2 Club America 1

Yup, it was only a friendly. But Club America was not in the mood to be beaten and so they did not use the liberal substitution policies available for friendlies and they picked up a few yellow cards. Meanwhile, the LA Galaxy did an "A" team for the first half and a "B" team for the second half.

Here are the highlights from the game.

Keane's goal was the result of an incredible pass and then Keane snagged it down and put it in the net!

Meanwhile, in the words of the FS1 announcer, "Gordon rising like a salmon" put the header in the net for the winning goal!

The LA Galaxy PR machine has put out episode 3 of From Liverpool to Los Angeles:

And episode 4 .......

Next up is a US Open Cup match against Real Salt Lake on Tuesday. Am guessing Gerrard maybe used in the first half as he was in the friendly against Club America to continue the effort to get him familiar with his teammates and the MLS game. Gerrard made some nice long passes against Club America and had one hard shot on goal. Will see how he quickly he and his teammates get on the same wavelength in terms of passing and running at the goalie. Additionally, some features of MLS life are warmer temperatures (unlike the usually colder and damper Premier League) and the occasional stadium at elevation. Rio Tinto in Salt Lakes at 4500 feet. Colorado Rapid's Park is at 5200 feet. So will see if he plays and how much in US Open against Salt Lake.

The other question for the coaching staff is how much of the "B" team will be used in the game since US Open Cup is played under regular substitution rules (only 3). In the last US Open Cup match, Coach Arena's starting XI included 6 of the "B" team used against Club America.

On Friday, LA returns to MLS play against San Jose.

Its a log jam in the Western Conference with Seattle, Vancouver, and Dallas with 32 points. Portland and LA at 31 points. Kansas City is at 30 points but have 4 games in hand. The clubs besides LA have 1 or 2 games in hand.

Ingmar Bergman - The Seventh Seal

Photo is of the beautiful rocky beaches at Hovs Haller (May 2015) where some scenes from the Seventh Seal were filmed.

In the continuing effort to become more acquainted with Swedish culture, went to iTunes to rent the classic film The Seventh Seal by Ingmar Bergman. There are spoilers below!

The film was a vehicle to touch upon the modern (and timeless) angst felt by Bergman and many people in regards to the intersection of the harshness of life and (un)belief in God.

The Knight is a believer who is facing doubt and his squire side-kick has long since abandoned faith. The Knight meets Death and offers a game of chess as a "delaying tactic" that permits the rest of the story. Along the way, these two comment from their perspectives about the various people and situations they encounter. The film catalogs examples of the bad side of the Christian faith: the discussion about fear as a motivator in the artist's drawings in the church, the hypocritical seminary graduate, the bizarre pageant of the Cross and self-flagelation, and the burning of the girl.

The mostly bleak story set in the plague endemic Middle Ages has moments of humor and a beautiful small slice of life scene when the Knight enjoys a respite of milk and strawberries with Jof, Mia and their infant. Is it a "eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die" moment? Or is it the kind of joy and gratitude that comes from the simple faith that Jof and Mia appear to have and that for a brief moment the Knight reclaims?

Don't think it would be much of a spoiler to say that Death wins the chess match. The ending of the film is intriguing and open to interpretation. Death leads the band of travelers in a dance. But to where?

Each character in the film responds to the intersection of the harshness of life and (un)belief in God in their own way. Beyond the Knight's overt struggle between faith and doubt and the squire's welcoming an abandonment of faith, there is the girl who says almost nothing in the film, the actor who does whatever he wants, the bickering married couple, and the stoic Knight's wife. This undoubtedly mirrors the variety of human responses to the realities of life.

From what I have heard, Bergman did not have a positive outlook about the Christian faith. How much of that was from seeing bad examples and how much his own worldview? Sadly, it is easy to say bad things about the Christian faith by pointing to bad examples of the Christian faith as they are all too common.

Since movies are often the visions of the creative force behind them, one wonders which of the characters in the movie did Bergman identify with the most?

One would guess Max Von Sydow's Knight.

Interestingly, the Knight feels he must do something to earn peace of mind and he latches on to the chess game to delay death and preserve the lives of Jof, Mia, and their infant. Did Bergman feel his film(s) were a way to earn peace of mind and make use of his time while the chess game with death plays out to its inevitable conclusion?

In regards to the Knight, might that be part of the Knight's folly? After all, is it possible that on this particular occasion Jof, Mia, and their infant weren't on Death's visitation list? Thus, the Knight's efforts may have had no actual effect on their situation? The "extra time" was meant really for the Knight to sort through his own life? Thus, did the Knight miss the "Amazing Grace?" Amazing Grace is not earned, rather it is received and accepted with humility and gratitude and joy.

The contrast of the Knight's grim predicament is quite striking compared to Jof, Mia, and their child who exude simple joy which seems to grow out of their faith. One might wonder if Bergman longs for that simple faith but finds himself as Van Sydow's knight looking for answer and seeking to earn peace of mind and missing out on that simple joy?

On the other hand, is Bergman, in some ways mocking Jof, Mia, and their baby's idilic but ultimately naive life?

Don't know which way Bergman was going with that contrast.

But going back to the film's narrative arc which catalogs the failing of people who claimed to have faith.

My response would be to acknowledge the failings of Christian people (can't deny the obvious). I would also point out that God, if we believe he exists, isn't going to be fooled by such people who claim faith but live in destructive ways. I would also go forward and point toward good examples of the Christian faith - indeed, one can find them (e.g. Mother Teresa, individuals and organizations that fought slavery and do so today in fighting human trafficking, etc). And, of course, one must look at the central figure of the Christian faith - Jesus. A reading of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) shows Jesus facing the central struggle of humanity - the intersection of the harshness of life and belief in God. His righteousness, compassion, servanthood, and obedience through it all results in the injustice of death on the Cross and the vindication of resurrection!

The Knight, in his confession in the church to the shadowy figure whom he thought was a priest but was actually Death, says he wants God to reach out his hand, show his face, and speak to him.

To which again, one must look at the central figure of the Christian faith - Jesus. John 1:14, And the Word abecame flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

God has reached out his hand, shown his face, and spoken to us: through Jesus!

USWNT win the 2015 Women's World Cup!

Congrats to the USWNT! A strong start put the game away.

Here is episode 7 of Behind the Crest.

Look forward to episode 8 to give a window into that final match.

UPDATE:  Looks like no episode 8 but there is this montage video recapping all the matches uploaded by a fan!

Galaxy 4 Toronto 0

Earlier in the season things were looking bleak for LA. But it was not the time to panic, as the cliche in sports is that one must not get too high or too low. This is especially true if your club has a history of getting things organized as the season goes on. Definitely, this is the case with the LA Galaxy. The management team has an eye for spotting and developing young talent and they have the savvy to bring in international veterans.

And so, now, it is the don't get too high part of the season!

Beating Toronto 4-0 is a good thing but let's not get too big headed as Toronto is missing six players to Gold Cup duties compared to LA sending four. Additionally, some of their other western conference rivals have two (Seattle, Vancouver, Portland) to five (Kansas City) games in hand.

Nonetheless, the trend arrow is up for the Galaxy as they continue to blend new talent (Zardes, Villarreal, Lletget, Maganto, etc) with the veterans (Keane, Gordon, Gonzalez, etc). And, of course, Liverpool veteran Steven Gerrard will be joining the club this month!

In other LA Galaxy news, midfielder Stefan Ishizaki is returning to Sweden. Have seen (on TV) his contribution to the team through nifty passing and by all accounts he was a good off-the-field and in the locker-room presence. All the best to Ishizaki!

International vs. Club Soccer?

Being relatively new to watching soccer, one thing I did figure out was that in the men's game, the best clubs could probably beat the best national teams.

Reason #1, the highest levels of the top clubs have hoards of cash to buy the best players from around the world and are essentially forming something of an international all-star team. The national teams can only draw upon, obviously, only those who are passport holders of that nation so the talent base is simply not as big.

Reason #2, the clubs play a long schedule and get good at playing together while national teams train in fits and starts so they never get totally used to each other.

This item over at ESPNFC by Michael Cox gives those reasons and more.

I wonder if that is true for the women's game?

I suspect not.

1) The international competitions probably hold higher prestige value than club level achievements at this time.
2) I am guessing that club level women's soccer just doesn't have enough cash in it to have the same international all-star team effect as in the men's game.

From what I gather, the UK women's national team has gained a lot of public affection because of how well they are doing and the level of passion of their play. Meanwhile, the UK men's national teams are known for early flame outs and fans saying they play with no passion because they are saving their energy for where they get their paychecks - the clubs they play for.

The US Women as a group and as individuals have been rock stars because of their success, interesting personal stories and admittedly a very well oiled PR machine.

In the US Men just a few individuals have been breaking through to become the "face of the team" but nowhere near the US Women. Also, I think the USMNT has gained a following more as a collective group due to national pride reasons rather than great successes and compelling individual stories. I'm sure US Soccer would like to see the USMNT get farther in the World Cup and find some marketable "faces of the team" to further its popularity.

Aging Parents - Random things from this season of life, part I

A handful of years ago, I entered the phase of life of helping out in looking after aging parents.  At this moment in 2024, my dad passed on...
