Inside a Random Mind offers up observations on the passing scene of life and culture. Melissa introduced our youth group to the Lifehouse Everything Skit. Excerpt of her reflections on that skit:
But this one touched me on a such a deep level. I felt the Lord truly grab onto my heart and reasure me that it belonged to Him. It was like watching every aspect and phase of my life being performed before me, it was scary. Not only did I see that, but I felt like I was also watching those phases of my life from Jesus' perspective - and what He was going through at the same times. Trying to get my attention when I wondered, trying to win me back, fighting to get me back, battling what I could no longer handle when my strength was completely drained.. still He was there fighting for me.
Jason is blogging up a storm over at Obediently Authentic. Looks like the memes being discussed come from a class on Christianity and contemporary culture. Here is an example:
Is home constituted as a place of relaxation? Maybe a space that is private or public? Is space considered to be sacred? Should it be? Should "our" space be ours and not be interrupted by others?
Nick over at Reflecting shares about an interesting movie about teenagers. Excerpt of his thoughts on the film American Teen:
Essentially the film follows the lives of 4 "cliche" high school students through their senior year in a small midwestern town in Indiana. While all will undoubtably find their story and the stories of others within the stories of the four whom the film focuses upon, something else stood out to me in the film. It was the most hidden and disheartening part of the overall story.
There were no adults in the lives of the students.
Well, there were adults... But they were hardly "in" the lives of the students. In a best case scenario, the adults were peering into the lives of the students from a safe distance.
Rambling about soccer: LA Galaxy, IF Elfsborg, Falkenbergs FF, Liverpool FC, Queens Park Rangers, and LAFC. Also random rambling about Star Trek, LA sports (Dodgers, UCLA, Kings, Lakers, Rams), politics (centrist), faith (Christian), and life. Send comments to rrblog[at]yahoo[dot]com.

Ben Witherington is a serious hard core Biblical scholar. And it is great to see he is funny as heck too ...
Just love it.
And this too!

Speedsters in stiletto high heels ... whoa, look at the determination in their faces!
Oprah.com's 20 questions to ask before you get married ... amazing how many questions are really practical ones!
I occasionally catch Krista Tippett's Speaking of Faith radio show on the radio. More often, I'll hear it via podcast if the topic sounds interesting.
Really was moved by their recent program on L'Arche which are communities of faith where mentally disabled individuals team up with assistants who help them. As a "high functioning" scientist type of person, it is so easy for me to define my life by what I do. Listening to the show reminded me that humans have an intrinsic dignity and worth regardless of what one is able to do.
I also heard on podcast, Krista's discussion about Marriage, Family and Divorce from Jewish and Christian traditions. Not surprisingly, a lot of the thoughts were highly pragmatic compared to the idealized vision our Western media-soaked culture has.
One interesting section was a discussion on the familiar notions of love as eros, phileo and agape. If I heard him correctly, the guest put it this way, eros is the love of a man and woman looking into each other's eyes. Phileo is of two people side-by-side looking at the same thing. In marriage, eros will wax and wane but if phileo is gone, the marriage is dead. And he also, of course, talked of agape love and illustrated by describing what should he do when he is working in the study and his daughter interrupts him. He said, if I always respond to my daughter, she becomes a tyrant! If I never respond, she stops wanting to interact with me. Agape love is never easy; it is finding the right response for the situation so that the receiver of agape is bettered.
Came across this sweet story about a 42 year old football mom from Florida who spearheaded a fund-raising effort to build a football field for Barrow High School. Barrow as in the town at the Arctic circle of Alaska!
Diane has some strong feelings about the whole "emergent" church movement. Here are some of her bottom lines.
In this item, Dan Kimbal tackles the question of what is "core" and "not core" in the emerging church conversation.
Enjoy!

Skyepuppy has this fun little item about what folks in North Dakota do for fun! If we wind up doing something like this in Los Angeles, we know the world as we know it will be coming to an end soon!
American Minister in the UK is feeling his age. I have to say, I had a similar moment with the junior high folks when some of the students were talking about flying squirrels and I said, you know there was a cartoon character named Rocky who was a flying squirrel and there was a moose named Bullwinkle. They had no idea what I was talking about!
Yahoo's Movie Mom, Nell Minow has a blog. Here is her interview with Michael Apted the director of Amazing Grace which recounts the struggle to end slavery in England. I saw the film and highly recommend it. It is a movie story about how a small number of committed people can make a difference in the world. William Wilberforce's dedication was remarkable. Also, an outstanding performance was given by Albert Finney who played John Newton the slave ship captain who changed 180 degrees upon following Jesus, who wrote the song Amazing Grace and was a mentor to Wilberforce.
Here is a video item that might sting us in the church. HT to ThinkChristian.
And here is another YOUtube.com item that puts advertisement beauty into persepective. HT: Think Christian again.

Elsewhere: Cool items I've seen while web surfing
Ben Witherington is honest about the limits of his craft but he does make interesting points and especially so in this item about the possibility that the "Beloved Disciple" of the Gospel of John was Lazarus!
In this item Ted Slater shares about how he struggled in his Christian faith when he started college. He urges college students and those who care for a college student to check out this item. The article gave the following advice: Find and join a good church, Choose your friends with biblical criteria in view, At all costs, remain sexually pure, Study, Call home, Remember the counsel of God.
I know the Super Bowl has past already but I thought this perspective (from God's point of view) was kind of neat.
YS Marko is the Green Lantern. Apparently, I'm Spiderman! I haven't even seen any of the movies!
Your results:
You are Spider-Man

I loved the film the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The other C.S. Lewis work that I hope would make it to film is the Screwtape Letters. Well, according to this item, it looks like it might happen!

Elsewhere: Neat stuff in the blogsphere
I'm slowly entering the 21st century. I've set up a blog news feed through Bloglines.com.
So what are some neat things I've seen lately?
YS Marko shared a cool Youtube.com video with the title, "Free Hugs."
What did you think of the video? Be sure to read the blurb at Youtube for the backstory of the video.
Skyepuppy shares a news item about a woman who beat the tar out of a mountain lion to save her husband. NEVER go into the wilderness alone!
The D'Elia's have moved to Narnia ... well, actually London. I once did the call to worship reading during a service he preached at. After the service, for some reason we started talking about the band Katrina and the Waves! Also, one summer I served alongside his wife with the pre-schoolers at Sunday church. Look forward to checking in on their adventures in the days ahead.
Nick is thinking about the balance between art, the word and sacrament in corporate worship.
We've all heard the "professionals" give their take about the State of the Union. But I often feel your average guy from middle America (or in this case middle of California) gets to the heart of the matter.
